The consistency of the base is closer to being thick, but not as thick as gel. It has a pleasant texture and doesn't have a strong smell. However, the lid mechanism has broken a few times. When you try to screw it all the way, it slips, resulting in me accidentally rubbing off all the labels from other jars due to my carelessness.
