When is the best time to test for anemia?
A ferritin test, in addition to preventive recommendations, is indicated in the following situations when we are particularly prone to iron deficiency:
during heavy menstruation, fibroids, or postmenopausal bleeding,
kidney diseases (and associated hematuria),
gastrointestinal bleeding (possible consequence of esophageal varices, colon and stomach cancer, parasitic and peptic diseases, use of blood-thinning medications),
poor nutrition that does not provide the necessary amount of nutrients and minerals.
In other cases, it is advisable to conduct an iron deficiency test if you belong to the following groups:
pregnant and breastfeeding women,
people who engage in intense physical activity,
adolescents whose bodies are in a growth phase,
individuals treating vitamin D deficiency.
