Ovulation Test for Determining Fertile Days.
What is ovulation? As is known, a woman becomes pregnant when her egg cell is fertilized by sperm. Ovulation is a natural process that occurs every month. During this time, the level of a specific ovulation hormone, known as the luteinizing hormone (LH), increases and can be detected in urine. This surge in LH triggers ovulation, which is the release of an egg from the ovary, typically in the middle of the monthly menstrual cycle.
The LH level (LH surge) rises approximately 24 hours before ovulation. The test detects this LH surge, thus allowing you to determine the timing of ovulation. The period during which you can become pregnant is limited since the egg survives only for a short time after being released from the ovary (about 24 hours), and sperm can survive for only a few days. When the test is conducted according to the instructions provided in this leaflet, the reliability of detecting the LH surge in a urine sample is high. Comparative tests conducted in medical laboratories have shown the test's accuracy to be 99%.
When should you take the test? To determine the day of the LH surge, you need to perform a urine test every day at about the same time. For women with a regular menstrual cycle, five days of testing is usually sufficient. To determine which day of the cycle to start testing, subtract 16 days from the length of your cycle.
For example: if your cycle lasts 28 days, you should start testing 12 days after the beginning of your menstrual cycle.
When should you have intercourse? You are most likely to get pregnant during intercourse on your most fertile days, when you are ovulating.
When are the two most fertile days? The two most fertile days start on the day you notice the LH surge and continue for about two days after that.
How do you measure the duration of the menstrual cycle? Count the number of days from the first day of menstruation to the first day of the next menstruation. For most women, a regular menstrual cycle usually lasts 28 days.
What if your menstrual cycle is irregular? If you have an irregular menstrual cycle, choose the shortest cycle from the past three months and conduct the test according to that cycle (using the table provided above). In this case, you may need to take more than 5 ovulation tests to determine the two most fertile days.
How long should testing continue? If you do not detect an LH surge after 5 days of testing, you should continue testing for a few more days until you get a positive result (indicating an LH surge). If you do not detect an LH surge after three menstrual cycles, consult a doctor.
