For a thin line, use the pointed tip of the brush. For a thicker line, use the flat side of the brush. To draw a straight line, stand in front of a mirror and tilt your head back about 10° to clearly see your lash line. Draw a line from the outer corner of your eye to the middle of your eyelid. Then draw another line from the outer corner of your eye and connect it to the previous line.
