Start with a small amount of clay between your palms and fingers. Warm the clay before applying it to either damp or dry hair. This ensures easy application and prevents clumps of clay from sticking to your hair.
The clay is quite intriguing. In short: it provides good hold with a matte finish. Now, let's dive into the details, discussing the pros and one con, step by step.
First off, MakeUp did an outstanding job as usual, with a 5+ rating. I received my eagerly anticipated package at the post office (not due to delivery time, but rather because I've wanted to try this clay for a long time) and unpacked it. I was immediately impressed by the stylish, marble-themed box. Inside, there was a 100 ml jar waiting for me. Unlike any other jar I've seen, it’s made of durable, quality plastic. But the standout feature is the jar's rubberized texture, which feels incredibly pleasant to the touch, similar to an original iPhone case. The manufacturer really nailed it—this jar is something you just want to keep handling. The combination of the box and the jar is completely satisfying.
Upon opening the jar, you're greeted by a clay with a delightful scent that unfolds like cool caramel—gentle and refreshing. It reminds me of the Kevin Murphy Rough.Rider clay, as the fragrances are quite similar. The box, jar, and scent are top-notch.
Next, let's talk about the clay's consistency. Initially, it feels a bit firm to the touch, but as soon as you scoop it out, it starts to soften instantly, spreading in your hands like smooth butter without any stickiness. The texture is perfect, arguably ideal.
Application on hair comes next. I always apply it to dry hair (I'm not a fan of applying it to wet hair or other similar techniques). This clay offers the most effortless application of all I've tried, even outperforming PerfomeN King and Kevin Murphy Rough.Rider, which are known for their smooth application and distribution. It's like a silky, gliding application.
Now, onto the hold. To achieve the hold that Re-New Copenhagen Stone Clay No. 09 can provide, you might need to apply 2-3 layers. The initial hold is medium, but after about 10 minutes, if you restyle with your hands, you'll notice the clay transforms from medium to strong and flexible hold. It doesn’t dry out; instead, the hold improves over time. Plus, there's no stickiness—truly none. The hold seems to come from something else—it's like magic. The finish is 100% matte, beautifully so. The hair doesn't look dry or lifeless, nor greasy or wet. It’s completely matte and looks great. The texture is stunning, appearing luxurious due to the lack of stickiness, and you can style your hair in any way you wish. The clay also provides excellent volume.
We have covered almost everything, except for one last point—washing it out. This is perhaps the only downside. The clay is not easy to wash out of hair. I experimented and found that even after three washes, it wasn't completely gone. You'll feel like there's still something in your hair after washing and blow-drying, giving the appearance of pre-styled hair. However, this isn't necessarily a problem. Firstly, during physical activity or sweating, the clay won't just wash away, allowing you to restyle your hair at any time, as it’s water-resistant like Davines Clay (More Inside series). Secondly, the leftover clay doesn't interfere with creating a new hairstyle the next day—it won't make your hair greasy or cause any inconvenience. In fact, it acts more like a pre-styling product. But objectively, the downside is that it may take 5-6 washes to remove it completely from hair and 3-4 washes from your hands. Yet, as Robin James says: in styling, the finish matters most—not how it's applied or how much effort it takes to remove it.
This clay definitely makes it into my top list (1. QM Plastilin, 2. PerfomeN King, and 3. Kevin Murphy Rough.Rider)—all available on MakeUp. These clays share a lot in common; they are all fantastic. Compared to No. 1 QM Plastilin, they are very similar, although washing it out is a bit more challenging. Yes, it costs four times more, but if you have the opportunity, it's worth trying—it's an interesting experience. It might not be suitable for very short hair. To sum up, this clay is fantastic. A couple of layers give excellent hold, and the finish is entirely matte. The clay is vegan and premium quality.
