The smell is pleasant, but that's about it. No effects whatsoever. The skin feels smooth and nice after applying it (like after using a face wash gel), but within a couple of minutes, it dries out and feels tight, so you definitely need to apply regular moisturizer. And this is coming from someone with combination skin, with a fairly oily T-zone. The color of the face doesn't change, nothing brightens or calms down. However, it doesn't cause any harm either.
