Cholesterol is synthesized naturally in the body. The majority is produced in the liver, while a smaller percentage is absorbed from food. Cholesterol is primarily found as a component of cell membranes and also plays a role in bile synthesis and skin protection. A normal total cholesterol level in the blood is less than 200 mg/dL. Elevated cholesterol levels indicate a risk of developing atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can go unnoticed for decades and is only recognized when it has reached a very advanced stage. It is one of the most common and serious cardiovascular diseases in developed countries.
Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels) is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of mortality in developed countries. According to a study of 9,000 people, more than half of the adult population in Hungary has cholesterol levels above the reference value. When it comes to lifestyle-related risk factors, it is particularly important to examine obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and a high-fat diet. In cases of previously diagnosed high cholesterol levels or hereditary lipid metabolism disorders, it is advisable to demonstrate the effectiveness of proper nutrition and lifestyle.
It can be used several times a year, even in conjunction with other tests.
