How to properly care for the delicate balance of intimate areas?
The vaginal microbiota consists of 90% "good" lactic acid bacteria (lactobacilli), which colonize the vagina during puberty and form what is known as the Doderlein flora. Lactobacilli form a biofilm that creates a protective shield on the vaginal mucosa. They convert glycogen, secreted by the cells of the vaginal mucosa, into lactic acid, creating an acidic environment necessary to maintain the vaginal pH between 3.5-4.5.
To maintain the delicate balance of the vaginal bacterial flora, we must take care of the lactobacilli! If the "good" bacteria occupy the space on our mucous membranes, the "bad" bacteria cannot settle there!
However, the balance of bacterial flora can be disrupted by our lifestyle, the underwear we wear, and even hormonal changes.
How do female hormones affect the microbiota?
Lactobacilli depend on the concentration of estrogens, i.e., hormones produced by the ovaries. For this reason, periods of significant estrogen fluctuations (menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause) are times of fragility in intimate areas, favoring discomfort and infections.
That's why it's so important to choose the right intimate hygiene gel that gently cleanses, moisturizes intimate areas, and maintains the balance of bacterial flora, regardless of the female rhythm.
