Outline the contour of your lips. Then, gently twist the base of the tube to extend the lipstick about 15 mm from the edge of the tube. Apply it to your lips and distribute evenly.
It fits horribly, it accentuates things that weren't there. I don't know what kind of lips are supposed to look good with it. And the color is a whole different story, not at all like the swatch. And we're not even talking about color accuracy, it's like I applied a foundation on my lips. Don't buy it.
The lipstick is definitely an acquired taste. Applying it without prior application of lip balm is very challenging, as it doesn't sit well and tends to smudge, leaving a white mark in the area where the inner lip begins. The New York shade is hardly noticeable on the lips, even though mine aren't particularly dark. In short, it's better to explore other options. I only gave it a 2 because of the nice magnetic case.
