The applicators are not small, the heads are quite large. The material is soft sponge, which was important to me because silicone does not pick up or transfer eyeshadow well. However, overly soft sponge is also not good, as it tears easily. In these applicators, the sponge is dense and well adhered. I removed the thin sponges and placed the applicators in the powder container.
